Sarah Billington is an Australian writer and editor who likes to write stories with love, laughs, suspense and zombies. Sometimes all in the same story. Her favouritest thing to write about are those horrendously awkward moments that come with being a teenager. Or a human being. Sarah was extremely accident-prone and klutzy as a kid and teen, so her cup runneth over with experiences of horrendously awkward moments to draw from in her writing. Thankfully, she has grown out of her klutziness. Mostly. She is, however, still an embarrassment.

Character Interview w/ Jagger (Initiation)

I have a very exciting post to bring to you today!  Author Imogen Rose is here and has interviewed her character Jagger (photo enclosed DON'T DROOL). Jagger is from Initiation and I have a bit about that as well. Enjoy!

 Amazon
Barnes & Noble

Welcome to Bonfire Academy!

Set in the foothills of the alpine mountains in St.Moritz, this exclusive private school caters to a special kind of student. Enter at your own risk... but if you are human, you may not want to enter at all.

WARNING: This YA story is set in a school for paranormals who are very different from normal human teens. Thus, the language and some scenes might not be appropriate for younger YA readers. Recommended for those sixteen and above.

An Interview with Jagger

I have to be honest. I approached this interview with some hesitation, perhaps even a little trepidation. After all, even though I feel I know him a bit through Cordelia, I’ve never experienced Jagger directly. As he sits before me, I can empathize with Cordelia. He is impossibly magnetic, his aura both powerful and dangerous, the only release, a hint of humor gleaming in his silver-gray eyes.

IR: Jagger, thank you so much for agreeing to this interview. Are you excited about starting a new year at the Academy?

Jagger: My pleasure. I am, though I’m not exactly sure what my role will be this year. I guess I’ll find out when I get there.

IR: So, you’re not heading back as the Student Council President?
Jagger: My pleasure. I am, though I’m not exactly sure what my role will be this year. I guess I’ll find out when I get there.

IR: So, you’re not heading back as the Student Council President?

Jagger: I wouldn’t think so. That position is usually only awarded for a year. Plus, my time at the academy is officially over.

IR: Why are you going back, then?

Jagger: Mainly to keep an eye on my brother, Ryker.

IR: And Cordelia?

Jagger: Yes, hmm. You said that you had some questions from my fans...

IR: I do! Here is one from Sean Sweeney. He wants to know what you got Cordelia for Valentine’s Day.

Jagger: Myself. However, like any girl, she obviously needed a “token” as well. I got her a little secret something from Harry Winston.

IR: Nice! The next question is about Cordelia as well. Al Kunz, the infamous celeb book blogger, aka The Snake, wants to know what really happened on the slopes. He wants details.

Jagger: He couldn’t handle the details.

IR: LOL! There you have it, Al! Moving on... Michelle Cable wants to know what you thought when you first saw Cordelia and what you thought of that electrifying kiss.

Jagger: That she’s stunning is apparent to all who are lucky enough to behold her. I was struck by her beauty as soon as I saw her, when she first arrived at the academy. It was my policy to stay away from demons, though. Every kiss with her is electrifying, but I’m guessing you mean our very first kiss. I was shocked, but immediately realized what had happened.

IR: Too bad that doesn’t happen to humans. Synching sounds unbelievably intimate...

Jagger: It is, but the realization that one is bound forever to this one being frightening, too. That’s unnatural in the supernatural world.

IR: I can see that. Faustine seems to bridge the gap between the human and the paranormal worlds. My daughter Lauren wants to know what you think of Faustine, and Vickie Boehnlein wants to know if you’re scared of Faustine.

Jagger: I love Faustine. She’s like a little sister to me. I feel very protective of her, even though I know that she can take care of herself. And yes, I’m scared of her. I’d be stupid not to be. She’s one of the most powerful demons I’ve ever come across.

IR: Demons seem to like their food, meat in particular. Lynn O’Dell would like to know if you prefer filet mignon or T-bones?

Jagger: I’m not a demon, but I do prefer Filet Mignon.

IR: That doesn’t surprise me. I have a last question from my friend Allirea Brumley. She wants to know what’s going to happen to you next?

Jagger: I’m not a Wanderer, so a trip into the future to answer that is not possible. Say “hi” to her from me, though. I love her name... Allirea. Is she a faery?
IR: Ha, ha. No, I don’t think so. Thank you so much, Jagger!

Review: Butterfly Kisses by Mia Castile

Butterfly Kisses
by Mia Castile

Published by: Entwined Publishing
Released on: October 23rd, 2012
Paperback/Ebook
240 Pages
Rating: 5/5

Butterfly Kisses is the second installment in The Butterfly Chronicles series. In the first novel, Becoming a Butterfly, we learned about Lacey and how she struggled with being accepted with her true self while her sister Lana dealt with suicidal issues in the background. In Butterfly Kisses, we get to see Lana step forward while she picks up her life and works on putting it back together all while struggling with being bullied from her past actions.

Lacey has adjusted well and obviously learned from her mistake. Things might not have went the way she would have liked, but her life is running quite smooth and everything is going amazingly well for her. I love how we get to see Lana's side and her view as to how she looks up to her sister. This is a new view of Lacey that we didn't get to see before. Lacey still gets stuck in awkward situations from time to time, but nothing like before.

I am so proud of Lana and her strong backbone as she moves forward and powers through everything. Things are looking great for both girls, they both have good guys, and everything is going in the right direction. But when things come crashing down around both sisters in ways never imagined, in ways that neither of them can do anything to change the situation, both of their lives are about to change drastically. Mia has written the perfect novel with love, friendship, despair, utter shock, and surprise.

Bloomsbury Bully Package Giveaway!

Today I have a giveaway package brought to you by the lovely Bloomsbury! This is a bully package where there will be two lucky winners. Each winner will receive a package containing BUTTER by Erin Jade Lange and FREAKS LIKE US by Susan Vaught.

A lonely obese boy everyone calls "Butter" is about to make history. He is going to eat himself to death-live on the Internet-and everyone is invited to watch. When he first makes the announcement online to his classmates, Butter expects pity, insults, and possibly sheer indifference. What he gets are morbid cheerleaders rallying around his deadly plan. Yet as their dark encouragement grows, it begins to feel a lot like popularity. And that feels good. But what happens when Butter reaches his suicide deadline? Can he live with the fallout if he doesn't go through with his plans? With a deft hand, E.J. Lange allows readers to identify with both the bullies and the bullied in this all-consuming look at one teen's battle with himself.

When Jason Milwaukee's best friend Sunshine vanishes, Jason knows that something is terribly wrong, but solving her disappearance will require pushing through all the voices in his head and then getting the world to listen to him. His schizophrenia is stopping him from remembering the events leading up to her disappearance, and often he discounts his own memories, and his own impressions. But his deep knowledge that he would never hurt his friend, plus the faith of his parents and a few others in the town bring him to the point of solving the mystery. In the end, it's Sunshine's own love for Jason (Freak) that persuades him of his own strength and goodness. By turns brilliantly witty and searingly honest, Susan Vaught's newest novel is a laugh-out-loud, tear-jerking, coming-of-age story.

Gratitude Giveaways Hop (The Farm)

Hi all! And welcome to Uniquely Moi Books. I am participating in the Gratitude Giveaways Hop and want to thank all my lovely followers and all my supporters. Now, just what will I be giving away? Hmmm... how about this:

Life was different in the Before: before vampires began devouring humans in a swarm across America; before the surviving young people were rounded up and quarantined. These days, we know what those quarantines are—holding pens where human blood is turned into more food for the undead monsters, known as Ticks. Surrounded by electrical fences, most kids try to survive the Farms by turning on each other…

And when trust is a thing of the past, escape is nearly impossible.

Lily and her twin sister Mel have a plan. Though Mel can barely communicate, her autism helps her notice things no one else notices—like the portion of electrical fence that gets turned off every night. Getting across won’t be easy, but as Lily gathers what they need to escape, a familiar face appears out of nowhere, offering to help…

Carter was a schoolmate of Lily’s in the Before. Managing to evade capture until now, he has valuable knowledge of the outside world. But like everyone on the Farm, Carter has his own agenda, and he knows that behind the Ticks is an even more dangerous threat to the human race...
Since this is a gratitude hop, I do ask that you be a follower in some way. This is the only giveaway that I ask that of.

Review: Something More by Mia Castile

Something More
by Mia Castile

Published by: Entwined Publishing
Released on: November 20th, 2012
Ebook
Rating: 4/5

*Please note this review was based from an ARC*

Something More is ranged more around the New Adult area. Based on a girl named Nyla, and her new life as she begins college is like a fresh and new beginning. And what is supposed to be a new start, leaves her with heavy shoulders. Nyla figured that she could leave everything from her high school days behind her and with an all new look, she starts college only to find that people from her past have followed her. Things still go well for her as she begins a new relationship with Ethan. Now, for the problem... Jamison has followed Nyla to her new college and this raises Nyla's guard. In high school, Jamison was constantly battling with Nyla and bullying her when he had the chance. Nyla always figured it was because of his good looks and popularity that he felt the need to bully her. Wearing braces and being on the plain side, didn't get her far with the boys.

Here's where things get interesting. Now, Jamison has decided to fancy Nyla and only wants to get to know her better. He clearly shows his interest, although sometimes it can be quite annoying, and being roommates with Nyla's boyfriend Ethan makes things that much more difficult.

So many times I just wanted Nyla to open her eyes and see how hard Jamison was trying. He was trying just for her. Then I would wonder if I would let someone in my life who treated me like that and the answer was no. The more time passed, the more Jamison would push her. The more he made his presence known. Did he transfer schools for nothing, works so hard and seemingly not ever want to give up for a girl who will never give him a chance? Or will love take hold?

Promo: Sheltered by Debra Chapoton

Today I am sharing with you, a bit of an inside look at SHELTERED by Debra Chapoton. I hope you enjoy!

Living together unsupervised, five troubled teens confront demonic forces and are compelled to deal with their problems in distinctly different ways. Paranormal meets psycho meets Goth in his story of a supernatural haunting and budding love.

High school junior, Ben, hacks into his step-father's real estate holdings and provides rooms in an old two-story house to various outcasts: the schizophrenic kid, the angry Goth girl, and the homeless girl who worships him. When Megan needs a place to live she comes to the rooming house with a different set of problems and the ability to confuse and attract Ben.

One by one strange and mysterious occurrences stretch the teens’ beliefs in the supernatural. How they deal with demons, real and imagined, has tragic as well as redeeming consequences.

Excerpt from Sheltered:

Prologue
Next Wednesday
Emily knew the precise moment that Ben returned, she felt him in her scars. She watched him carry some things to the house, heard the door close; she smiled when she heard him call out that Santa was here. He did that once before, in early December, insisting that she accept the gift he held out, not wanting her to wait until Christmas to use the mittens he knew she needed.
She went toward her door now, wondered what he had brought, and then heard Megan’s voice below. Oh no, he probably brought something for her. She scuttled back to her nest by the window and stared outside, was still staring fifteen minutes later when she saw them walk down the street, Ben shouldering a shovel, his other hand knotted with Megan’s.
She touched the skin on her arms, lightly at first, making it tingle. The image of Ben with Megan multiplied across her mind in broken mirrors, a repugnant picture that reflected her own self-loathing. She scratched at her scabs, felt the pricks of pain force away the ticklish sensations. She closed her eyes.
When she opened them she saw a figure standing at her door.
“Who-?” she started, but the figment waned to less than a shadow. Still, though, there was something at her door.
She rose slowly and held her hand out.
Its face was more womanly now, friendly, motherly. Yes, she knew this face. Its pearly white skin so shocking against the ruby lips, the stringy hair a match to her own. Her mother.
She stretched her fingers toward the face. The hallucination faded then sharpened. The eyes began to blaze. She drew her hands back to her own face. What’s wrong with me?  The delusion grieved Emily; all around her fluttered a longing.
And a deadly fear.

Debra Chapoton has taught kids of all ages in her main career as a teacher. She has a BA in Spanish and a Master of Arts degree in Teaching English. She started writing in 2002 and was surprised to find out that the characters quickly take over the action and dialogue in the stories.
Her first YA novel, Edge of Escape, was self-published and then discovered by Piper Verlag Publishing and translated into German. Stalking and obsession get a sympathetic twist in this story of physical and psychological survival.
Her second YA novel, Sheltered, detours into a different genre as she writes about five teens who confront supernatural forces. Two boys and three girls all harbor secrets which make some of them susceptible to demon possession. Embracing all things supernatural might protect them, but are they ready for the consequences?
Chapoton has also written eleven chapter books for middle grade kids and a non-fiction work for adults, Crossing the Scriptures.
When she’s not writing Chapoton enjoys the quiet of the full log home she designed and built with her husband. They live in the middle of 62 acres of beautiful woods in northern Michigan.

Review: Wonder by R.J. Palacio

Wonder
by R.J. Palacio

Published by: Knopf
Released on: February 14, 2024
Hardcover
320 Pages
Rating: 5/5

From the very beginning, R.J Palacio has written words that let us know this isn't going to be an easy story to read. The point of view starts with a young boy of ten years of age who was born with a rare disfigurement and lets us know that he probably looks worse than we imagine. He goes by the name of August and he is strong willed and incredibly strong minded. I found myself crying so many times at how brave and strong this young boy was through so many trying times. He explains that he has never stepped inside of a real school, only to begin the journey soon enough.
As August goes through his days inside of the life of a real school kid, he learns to deal with the name calling and shunning that he knew would happen. What I didn't know was that we would get to experience lives through the eyes of many of Augusts friends and even his sister, telling their side of the story and sharing in their experiences and beliefs of August.
In the end, things came together quite like they should. Unfortunately, it was over certain circumstances that never should've taken place. Wonder is full of compassion, heartache, and love. Through many events in the book, you will want to wrap your arms tightly around August and hold him ever so tight. Many bonds take place, and many tears will fall.

Author Interview- Katie French & Giveaway

Today I have the lovely Katie French who has allowed me to interview her. Katie is the author of The Breeders. Katie has also allowed me to give away one ecopy of The Breeders to one lucky winner!

Katie French is the author of the debut book The Breeders, a YA dystopian adventure available now on Amazon. She is also the co-creator and contributor with Underground Book Reviews, a site that seeks to promote quality unpaid book reviews to self-published and independent writers. Her passions are her family and her work with at-risk teens. You can find her at www.KatieFrenchBooks.com or on facebook.

1. Where do you draw your writing ideas from?

I draw my ideas from almost anywhere. Usually if I am stuck for an idea, I hit the gym. I've heard that our brain solves problems better when doing mundane tasks. I jump on the treadmill and usually read something about writing craft to get my brain going. It never fails to open up new doors, new possibilities I didn't see before.

2. Do you have anything you like to have when writing?
As a working mother, I write wherever I can, whenever I can, so all I need is a laptop and someone to watch my children for a bit. I've become very flexible about when and where I write: in my bed, in the basement, in a Starbucks, in my car (true story). I dream of the days when I might have an office full of windows and a set schedule where I get up and write with no distractions. But then, I love the chaos because I love my family.
3. What is something that most people don't know about you?

I'm a pretty open person so there's not much, but I think most people don't know how hard I am on myself sometimes. I'm a perfectionist and failure is not an option for me. But, I'm working on it. Good thing I'm a counselor and can use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on myself to try to keep sane.

4. Favorite scary movie?
This is the weird thing about me: I hate horror movies, but love thrillers. I loved the movies Signs and The Village. I loved I am Legend, but I'm not sure if that is considered a scary movie. I love psychological movies like Chronicle, not technically scary, but very insightful.

5. Where did the idea for The Breeders form?
The idea for The Breeders came when I was in my car alone (which doesn't happen all that often) and the Rihanna song came on the radio. She sang, “Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world.” I got to thinking, “Wow. The only girl in the world? I don’t think that would be as romantic or sexy as Rihanna’s song makes it out to be.” My mind unraveled from there.
6. If trapped inside of an asylum, what is one thing you would take with you?
Wow, an asylum. I think I would take a lock-picking set.
7. Three words to describe The Breeders?
