Review: Asunder by Jodi Meadows

Asunder
by Jodi Meadows

Published by: Katherine Tegen
Released On: January 29th, 2013
Hardcover
416 Pages
Rating: 5/5

*Please note, this review was based from an ARC*

Jodi Meadows is phenomenally talented when it comes to writing! I am just blown away by how beautifully written this series is. I was left in awe, and just completely speechless at times while reading  Asunder.

Ana knows that the people still don't accept her. And truth is, with her and Sam living outside of Heart and off by themselves, I enjoyed that a bit. We get to see a little one on one with them. A sense of peace even though Ana struggles with still not being accepted by the townspeople.

How odd, that the sylph showed up around the cottage and didn't seem to pose as a threat. And later, this played as a big factor, I loved, and never expected. Another factor in showing Meadows' talent.

Realizing that they must go back into Heart, they make it back and settle into Sam's house, only to face a town that refuses to accept a newsoul. But what's to come is so unexpected, no unbelievable, so shocking. The truth that has been hidden from Heart for so many years is about to surface, and nobody wants to believe it. Coming from a newsoul, how can they? I feel so sorry for Ana, as she struggles for acceptance, guidance, and truth.

Heart is about to get an awakening like never before, nobody is ready, no one prepared. But it's coming, like it, or not.

Review: Comes the Night by Norah Wilson and Heather Doherty

Comes the Night
by Norah Wilson and Heather Doherty
Published by: Something Shiny Press
Released on: December 9th, 2012
Paperback
323 Pages
Rating: 4/5

This is the second novel by Norah and Heather that I have read. I love their style and uniqueness. They work well together and I look forward to their work.

When I first started this novel, I was intrigued, then it did get a bit odd, but over time, it picked right back up, and filled my interest and left me yearning to know more. This is the first in a series, and I look forward to what's next.

When three very different girls come together in a housing residence for school, I looked for fights and major arguments to break out. That wasn't even close to what happened. A goody-two shoes, a rebel, and a trouble maker can get along, and they can bond well. They can also discover the unknown in the attic of an old house that used to be one girl's prison. With only one way to escape, and being falsely accused, fleeing seems to be the only option. But it's not what you think. Alex, Brooke , and Maryanne have discovered an amazing way to escape the world, but realizing that all those years ago, it's the only way that a young girl named Connie could escape for good, it makes them uncover the truth to the past and unbury all those hidden secrets.

Review: The One I Left Behind by Jennifer McMahon

The One I Left Behind
by Jennifer McMahon

Published by: William Morrow
Released on: January 2nd, 2013
Paperback
422 Pages
Rating: 4/5

Jennifer McMahon will never let you figure out her endings ahead of time. That is one of the mysteries and adventures of her novels. She will throw in so many twists, plots, turns, and dips, leaving you gasping and dumbfounded each and every time. This is what I love about her, and this is what I can't get enough of.

This novel is about a girl named Reggie. We get to see the past and present events of her life. As a young girl, the age of thirteen, there was a serial killer in the neighborhood, targeting young women, cutting off their right hand, and finally, killing them and disposing of their bodies days later. When Reggie's mom went missing, she knew it was just a matter of days. Her mother wasn't the best, and that's why her aunt had to step in and raise her the majority of the time. But when her mothers body never surfaced, everyone just assumed the killer had moved on.

Now, all these years later, Reggie packed up, moved away, and made a decent life for herself. But when a woman resurfaces and they think she is her mother, Reggie gets chills. Going back to her hometown, she knows trouble is about to resurface.

McMahon is one of my favorite authors hands down. She possesses a skill that is rare and unique. I can only hope that she never stops writing and I encourage everyone to pick up a copy of one of her novels, as they are highly addicting.

Review: Miss Fortune Cookie by Lauren Bjorkman

Miss Fortune Cookie
by Lauren Bjorkman

Published by: Henry Holt and Company
Released on: November 13th 2012
Hardcover
279 Pages
Rating: 4/5

Miss Fortune Cookie is not the average read. That's why, when Lauren had asked me to review it, I kindly and gladly accepted. The story is about a girl named Erin, who happens to be of Irish descent but grew up knowing and breathing nothing but the roots of China. She wanted to fit in with her best friends and knew that she didn't. In my eyes, Erin also lacked a few social skills, even admitting to not having a boyfriend. Now for the intriguing part. She began a blog, titling it Miss Fortune Cookie. And not letting anyone know who ran it, she started to give advice. It was ran by submitting a question, no matter how big or small and she replied back with an answer to help them out. The answers that Erin replied back with were so knowledgeable, and intelligent, I just loved them! It just amazed me that she was able to help others out with their problems, big or small and over time, started struggling with her own issues and didn't know how to deal with them. What she learns is that keeping secrets isn't always the best thing to do and people will come to accept your decisions and deal with them better if you are honest and open. True friendships never falter.

Q&A with Janet
Janet, can you tell us what was it about Daughter of Smoke and Bone that inspired you to create this collection?
The short answer? Because I LOVED the book!  Lol The long answer is that it's completely character driven.  I love the characters. In the beginning I wanted to make jewelry for each character, but in the end I decided to make the jewelry to go with all the different elements of the book, Resurrection, what a parent would do for a child, how love conquers all.  It was very Dumbledore-ish, it made me realize that the characters really represented bigger issues and that inspired the jewelry. Some of it is very literal, like the wishbone, which signifies what a father would do for their child to keep them from getting hurt.  The wishbone is the heart of the book, it's Karou's coming of age, representing how things get darker in the book.
What is your favorite piece from the collection and why is it your favorite?
Actually, I haven't made my favorite piece yet.  It's coming though! It's the hamsas.  I really wanted to include this piece in the collection, but it’s difficult to make because everyone knows what the hamsas is supposed to look like.  I want to make it very realistic, and hands are the most difficult to sculpt, to draw, and to create. I plan to have it completed and added to the collection by Valentine's Day. I wish I could share it you now!
What piece from the book would you want to add to the collection that you didn't get to make?
I am working on adding a medallion of Brimstone to the collection.  It was a piece that was requested specifically by Laini Taylor, and we have discussed since the beginning. It is also set to be completed and added to the collection before Valentine's Day! Also, Guppies are also coming before Valentine's day!

Finally, is there any last thoughts or information that you’d like to leave your fans with?

I’m trying to make a smaller version of the wishbone, possibly as an earring.  I would like to know if this is something that fans would be interested in. So in the comments below, please tell me if this is something you’d like to see added to the collection!

Guest Post~Author Faith McKay

Today I have the author of Prophecy Girl. Please kindly welcome Faith McKay to Uniquely Moi Books.

Faith McKay writes stories about characters with real world struggles in otherworldly settings. She is the author of PROPHECY GIRL, a story where characters struggle with the idea of having a destiny. In comparison, she feels really lucky that her destiny was to struggle with comma placement and be that awkward lady who points out puns at parties.

Other things to know about Faith… She wears two different colored shoes. She is a survivor of child abuse. She has lived with chronic illness for over a decade. A lot of people don't like her because she laughs too much. It's also the reason a lot of other people do like her, so go figure. She listens to more music than people are probably supposed to. She's a nomad. The word sounds really cool, so a lot of people say it, but she actually lives in an RV with her husband and their pet bunny rabbit, Dorian Gray.
Prophecy Girl:

Ever since Samantha Winthrop's mother moved them to Lacuna Valley, supposedly in search of better weather, the list of strange questions she has no answers for has been growing out of control.

Does her little sister, Violet, have the ability to make things happen just by "praying" for them? Are Sam's dreams really predicting the future? Is she destined to marry the boy she just met, and what is the mysterious orb that he's guarding? Why does she get the impression that there are dangerous creatures watching from the woods?

While Sam should be focusing on answering those questions, there is one other that makes them seem almost irrelevant: Is her mother planning on killing her and Violet?

The Character Who Isn't in Prophecy Girl

Leigh Peterson is a human friend that Sam meets at her high school in my novel, Prophecy Girl. She's pretty much the opposite of Sam, which makes her a great person to help Sam question her own life. She wears camouflage, loves purple, has a lot of attitude, and gets right into everybody's business—not that you'd know, because all of her big scenes were cut throughout the novel.

This decision is one of those that just sucked to make as a writer. It felt like killing a person. She had some great lines, she was really funny, she was insightful, and I just have this big soft spot for her.

Sometimes I think of writing as my own personal playground. People talk a lot about writers as control freaks who enjoy playing God. A lot of that is probably true, at least while writing, but once revision time comes around the flow of the story becomes the all powerful ruler that I, as a writer, am trying to appease. I look at every element and question "Does this add to the overall flow of the story I'm telling here?", and if the answer is no, it has to go, no matter how much I love it. Sometimes it can be a little heartbreaking.

The truth is, there were already a lot of characters in Prophecy Girl, and Leigh wasn't essential to the plot at this point in the story. I only introduced her when I did because she plays an important part in later books. I've cut and saved all of her scenes for potential use in the Lacuna Valley future, but I still look at Prophecy Girl and think, "That's where Leigh used to..."

I feel her presence like a ghost. My character ghost.

I have to keep reminding myself she's not really gone, because readers will get to know her soon enough in book two, where she plays a much bigger role. Until that time, here's one of Leigh's moments that was cut from Prophecy Girl, Lacuna Valley Book One.

"I know a lot of people think I'm cold or that I think love is overrated because I'm always butting into other peoples relationships. Love is not overrated. Love is everything. I just think you have to figure out how to be you, and everyone around here is always just giving away bits of themselves so they have somebody to touch their naughty places."
Sam laughed. "You're full of all kinds of wisdom, aren't you?"
"That's me, wise woman, shelling out the free advice."
