Let me start by saying that this is one of the best books that I have ever read. Jordan has went way off the beaten path to provide such a powerful and gripping novel that you won't be able to stop reading. You'll find yourself staying up late into the night, not wanting to put it down. It's like no other.
When Hannah awoke, she knew what to expect. Yet, looking at her skin and seeing it, red as it was...
The very same red as a stop sign. She had seen reds before, but seeing it on herself was different. The color doesn't wash away. It was implanted in her for what she did. The crime she committed. The same reason why the yellows are the yellows, oranges are the oranges, and so on and so forth. The crime you commit gets you the color that you can proudly display to the public. It wasn't Hannah's fault that she fell in love with a married man. She didn't mean to. She prayed to do the right thing. She couldn't keep the baby she carried inside of her. It just wasn't right. So many people would be hurt if they found out what had happened between them. So, she did the only thing she could think of, and because of that, she is now a red-a chrome, because she committed murder. She found a doctor willing to do an abortion. Not releasing the father's identity gets her a longer sentence, and her mother has practically shunned her. She has nowhere to go but a girls home that ends up having even bigger issues. The only thing that gives Hannah any hope whatsoever is when she thinks about him.
In the girls home, Hannah meets another girl named Kayla and over time, Kayla convinces Hannah that the girls home isn't the place for them, although, neither is the big world. Not for a chrome.
Hannah and Kayla are on their own, with the world against them, the world hates chromes.
Someone is about to kill them,
and someone is about to help them.
Which one can get there first?
And which one will they trust?
All these two girls want to do is be free. That's it. That's all.
Kayla didn't do anything bad. And Hannah only loved somebody.
