Y all the red-heads?

Is it just me, or have all the redheads on covers nowadays caught your eye too? The saying goes that redheads are meaner, so does that make for a better character, a better fighter, battling the bad guys? At one time, redheads were believed to be vampires with their fair skin just adding to that belief.

Yet, redheads have also been known in previous years to be witches. Seems most people frown on the idea of red hair, but in the book industry it sure seems to be rather popular. Just a coincidence or is it to help intensify the character? Hmm... What's your opinion on this one? You know that saying that redheads are meaner? I definitely believe that one, as I have a little redhead myself!
This is my little one!

  1. It's funny you would mention that people used to think redheads were vampires, witches, etc. I recently went to a new hair salon and when I asked the lady to dye my hair red all over (which it is whenever I can afford it), she actually said, 'You know, I've heard that red is the color of the Devil.' I was pretty much blown away by the remark and thought it was funny as well as a little scary.

Wonder what my hairdresser would think about all this red-haired heroine propaganda on YA book covers? ;) I really like the cover for Entangled.

  2. I actually came across a blog a while back that's dedicated to red headed heroines! haha! A lot of these covers are great! Maybe it has something to do with the fact that red heads are meant to be fierce and feisty?

    Cool post! :)

  3. Yes, I def think they are fierce and fiesty! I really like the covers too. And as far as red being the devils color...hmmm...Kat, maybe when you go back you should bring a book with a red head on the front! That'll get her to thinking!

  4. Hmm, I think it has to do with fiereceness but also the fact that redheads are unique and every author wants to have a unique character that sticks with the reader. I think it's interesting that there is so much hype over blondes and brunettes. Redheads are totally underrated. Fair and red headed is my favorite combination. Unfortunately, I'm brunette and when I dye my hair it fades insanely fast. Am I ready to be a book cover model, you think?:

Haha my hair is nothing like that anymore. Now I feel boring. Redheads for the win.

  6. I have also heard that red hair is very eye-catching, so using a red-headed image on a cover is a good way to draw attention to a cover...from a marketing stand-point. Plus, red hair is just so cool (I have 4 boys with shades of red hair ranging from light strawberry blonde to super dark auburn red)
